That's before the additions his sister has provided over the years, of course — their father, their mother, and three lovely ladies (and counting) he's married and buried... in pits of clay, or unmarked graves; does it matter which, when their ghosts have joined the crowded halls? Why, the house itself has been dead since before he was born; the very walls are covered in the bloody proof of the mortal wounds his father and grandfather dealt it, in their greed, breaking its bones to the very foundation (even if it's actually clay staining the walls and floor). His entire life has been dead; Edith might be one of the only things ever alive in it.

Dance: He can't remember when he learned to dance. That bothers him, sometimes, when he's feeling nostalgic; most of the time, he can smother that worry with the rising, lilting strains of another waltz, and the challenge of finding another perfect partner for another perfect dance, lit taper candle in hand already, all the better to awe and amaze her — to awe and amaze anyone who watches the fluid footwork and effortless grace he's worked so hard to master. After all, dancing is free, especially if one has such a talented musician available (at no additional cost!) as his sister — and practicing his waltzing is outright virtuous, if viewed in that light.

Pride: Eighty-eight years ago, Jane Austen published Pride and Prejudice, in which the impoverished heroine has to deal with a wealthy gentleman's snubs. (Among other details, like sisters and a very silly mother.) Thomas has always known he ought to have seen himself in Mr Darcy; he's always known that his life has cast him in as desperate straits as Lizzy Bennet has grown up in, though. Pride puts no food on the table; it fills no coffers; it reopens no mines or brick manufactories. Pride means starvation, and accepting the proposals of — inspiring proposals of — women he does not, has never, loved. Because they have money, and he (and his beloved sister Lucille) needs it. And because he has his pride, if nothing else, he will never be able to bear the shame of their knowledge of how dreadful the situation really is, either.

Sin: Is it a sin to love, or to be loved? Or is it only a sin if someone else learns about it? Thomas and Lucille were neglected, mistreated, abused and abandoned by their parents — loathed by their mother's hand-picked staff — barely tolerated even by Thomas's own tutors, who were not being paid well enough to cover the sorts of topics that might have prevented later moral outrage. Was it any wonder that, when Lucille's exploratory readings through the family library led her to such fascinating materials, she brought this new knowledge to her beloved younger brother, with the explanation that it was a new way of showing how much they loved each other? Perhaps the only sin was in responding to being discovered; perhaps it was in the way he has always been far too passive, accepting whatever Lucille told him was What They Would Do, even if that was 'wait here while I kill Mother'.

Child: They hadn't expected a child; neither of them really knew if they wanted a child, for that matter. By the time it was obvious that Lucille was pregnant, with an innocent heartbeat swelling under their questing hands, Thomas was ready to witter about uselessly, trying to figure out what could possibly be done about the situation. Lucille, though, realized soon enough — and told him — that she wanted to keep it, if she could. And... why not? Perhaps they could have the happy family their parents had never given them; perhaps they could skate past public perceptions and simply never answer questions about the parentage of Sir Thomas's heir! And then... then he was born wrong, with arms that were practically twigs, a mouth that looked more like a clawed-open hole than lips, and truly maddening screams that started after less than a day and never stopped until his death not quite a week later, sealed by the death of Thomas's latest wife, who had been so insistent that she might keep him alive indefinitely. Enough; too much.

🦋 Fae Court

List your top three choices for your characters adoptive court.
